Nights drawing in, a chill in the evening air, socks on after the freedom of sandals, autumn is here.

Looking back at T M McGrath’s work this year it’s possible to see just how affected the artist can be by the seasons. This is reflected in the variety of series that Tom has produced over the last 12 months.

These range from last summer’s ‘Manchester Renaissance‘ series

In pink, blue and ochre candy stripes, through to the starker greys, blues, blacks of the ‘Northern Town‘ series.

Winter in a Northern Town

The late Winter period was a very bleak and sad time for the artist and his work over this period reflects his innermost emotions, whilst also mirroring the season.

But onward to Spring, which burst into life in the studio with the ‘Brushstrokes‘ series. with its emeralds, scarlets and blacks of the lightening the industrial landscape, all conveyed  in wide, lively, energetic brushstrokes.

And so to Summer, and the watercolours, summer of 17 series. This series is one of my favourites with the languid summer hues evoking long, lazy days and hazy evenings.

Moorside Factory 2

Now here we go again with the latest offerings, not yet a series but tantalisingly close. We’ve provisionally named this ‘Autumnal Tones”). We can now offer you a sneak preview of some of the works as the city and hills dim a little.

September Song

Interestingly, the current paintings mark the return of a current T M McGrath theme which uses the abstraction of the industrial landscape into blocks, lines and chunks of colour, all interlocking onto the canvas, but somehow the city always peers out.
