Northern Town

T M McGrath’s lifelong fascination with his Northern surroundings continues in the ‘Northern Town Series’. The series, painted through quite a difficult period for the artist, contrasts with the brightness of the earlier Cityscapes Renaissance series.

Now we see the northern towns and cities in the Winter. The canvases are smaller, the images less determined. The brushstrokes are thicker with oils plastered or scraped onto the canvas surface. There is a sense of stillness reflected in the subtler palette of greys, blues and taupes. The dark industrial buildings appear to be waiting for a light to shine through the misty haze to come to life again.
