Train On The Viaduct

Following a period concentrating on classical interpretation of industrial and country scenes in watercolours of the 80’s and 90’s and predating the more abandoned period of interlocking and abstract art that marked the early part of this decade, these T M McGrath paintings mark a move into oils by the artist. More representational than his latter works, they still contain the basic subject matter that drives this artist: the industrial landscape of the North.

Whilst they also reflect the heritage of Lowry and Riley, they differ in the underlying sense of observing another place, not quite of our world. Whilst appealing to the nostalgia in us all, these works are somewhere in the past, present or future, but not our past present or future. This art of conjuring up a semi-mystical world is developed further in Tom’s later works.

The low evening sun speaks to the working man’s journey home, explicitly in Walking Home and implicitly in the others. The warm tones and particular attention to red brick textures brought through on the brush are arresting here.
