You may have noticed that our artist T M McGrath often uses stripes in his work. This is because he has a particular take on modern Manchester. He sees a place which has morphed from the dark Satanic mills of the world’s first industrial city to a place synonymous with fun, leisure, sport and entertainment, with places to eat, places to shop, pubs, clubs and concert halls, world class football stadia, all places to enjoy yourself. In some of his paintings, he shows the formerly gloomy city in gaudy holiday mood, with nineteenth century buildings restored and refashioned into apartments, hotels and restaurants, all expressed in the candy-coloured stripes of deckchairs, market stalls and festive bunting.
His new painting in the ‘Brushstrokes’ series, revisits this theme by showing a derelict canal scene, gloriously bursting into life with vivid red, green and blue stripes symbolising the regeneration of the city to lively hubbub of living.
